PROJECT 2

ROLE
Lead Designer

Design system and accessibility

These two initiatives became the perfect pair, helping to drive the other forward.

About 18 months ago, our design team realized the massive inefficiency in not having a centralized design system.
Not only was a designer’s time lost rebuilding and redefining core components, but also the loss in developer velocity and release quality was staggering.

The team also took this to further commit to a fully accessible website. Partnering with the product, the design team is dedicated to making the entire P+ platform fully accessible by 2023. It was, and still is, an ambitious goal. Every forum must adhere to strict access and easy usability guideline, including desktop web, mobile web, and native apps.

What we did:

As we worked to rebuild and redesign critical components on the site to meet our accessibility goals, I was able to forward our purpose of updating the details to our new reusable library.
Earlier this year, we officially created our Design Ops group. This team’s full-time responsibility was to further develop our design system, following the Atomic pattern established by Brad Frost. They ensure that every new component is accessible and harmoniously with the existing practices. The Sketch components then get added to the library, documented on our component wiki, and paired with a React component on Storybook.
The entire user experience team is now using our design system, and we have started to extend it to support the needs of the marketing and promotions teams. I am passionate about accessible-based design systems, how they can improve how we work, and the benefits they bring to all of our visitors.
